7 min read For new businesses preparing for GST registration
In short
  • Mandatory from rupee 1 if you sell inter-state, sell on Amazon/Flipkart, or fall under reverse charge.
  • Threshold limits. Rs 40 lakh for goods (Rs 20 lakh in special states). Rs 20 lakh for services (Rs 10 lakh in special states).
  • Documents needed: PAN, Aadhaar, business address proof (under 2 months old), bank details, DSC for companies and LLPs.
  • Process takes 3 to 7 working days if documents are clean. Address mismatches between rent agreement and application cause most delays.

GST registration is one of the first compliance steps for any new business in India. Whether you are launching an e-commerce store, opening a retail shop, or starting a consulting practice, understanding when and how to register for GST will save you from penalties, missed input tax credits, and business disruptions. This guide walks you through the entire process, updated for 2026.

Who Needs GST Registration?

GST registration is mandatory in the following scenarios, regardless of turnover:

  • Inter-state supply: If you sell goods or services to buyers in another state, registration is mandatory from the first rupee of turnover.
  • E-commerce sellers: Anyone selling through e-commerce platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, or Meesho must register, irrespective of turnover.
  • Casual taxable persons: If you occasionally supply goods or services in a state where you do not have a fixed place of business (for example, setting up a stall at an exhibition).
  • Reverse charge mechanism: If you receive supplies on which you are liable to pay GST under the reverse charge mechanism.
  • Input service distributors: Entities that distribute ITC across multiple branches or units.
  • Non-resident taxable persons: Foreign entities supplying goods or services in India.
  • TDS/TCS obligations: Entities required to deduct or collect tax at source under GST provisions.

Turnover Thresholds for Voluntary Registration

If none of the mandatory conditions above apply, registration becomes compulsory once your aggregate turnover exceeds:

  • Rs 40 lakh for suppliers of goods (Rs 20 lakh for special category states such as Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura).
  • Rs 20 lakh for suppliers of services (Rs 10 lakh for special category states).

Even if you are below these thresholds, you may choose to register voluntarily. This is often advisable if your buyers are GST-registered businesses who need input tax credit on their purchases from you. Without your GST registration, they cannot claim ITC, which makes you a less attractive supplier.

Documents Required

Keep the following documents ready before starting the application:

  • PAN card of the business entity (company, LLP, or partnership) or the individual (for sole proprietors).
  • Aadhaar card of all promoters, partners, or directors.
  • Proof of business address: Electricity bill, property tax receipt, or rent agreement with NOC from the landlord. The document must be recent (within the last 2 months).
  • Bank account details: A cancelled cheque or bank statement showing the account name, number, and IFSC code.
  • Incorporation certificate (for companies and LLPs) or partnership deed (for partnership firms).
  • Digital signature certificate (DSC) for companies and LLPs. Individual proprietors and partnerships can use Aadhaar-based e-verification instead.
  • Photograph of all promoters or partners.
  • Authorisation letter if the application is being filed by an authorised signatory.

Step-by-Step Online Registration Process

1
Generate TRN on the GST Portal. Visit gst.gov.in, click "Register Now" under Taxpayers. Enter PAN, mobile, and email. OTP-verify both. You get a Temporary Reference Number.
2
Complete Form GST REG-01. Log in with the TRN. Fill business details, promoter info, authorised signatory, principal and additional places of business, HSN/SAC codes, and bank account details.
3
Upload documents and submit. PDF and JPEG only, within size limits. Verify with DSC (companies and LLPs) or Aadhaar e-sign (proprietors and partnerships).
4
Officer reviews in 3 to 7 working days. If a clarification is needed, you get Form REG-03. Respond within 7 working days via REG-04 or the application is auto-rejected.
5
Receive your GSTIN in Form REG-06. A 15-digit GST Identification Number. Download the certificate and display it at your principal place of business.

Common Mistakes That Delay Registration

1
Address mismatch on the rent agreement

The address on your rent agreement or utility bill must match exactly with what you enter in the application. Even minor discrepancies trigger REG-03 clarification notices.

2
Wrong HSN or SAC code

The wrong commodity or service code causes issues with returns later. Take time to identify the correct codes for your primary products or services before applying.

3
Bank account not yet opened

You can add bank details within 45 days of registration, but having them ready at application speeds up the process. Officers process applications with complete details faster.

4
Expired address proof

Utility bills or rent agreements older than 2 months are frequently rejected. Get a fresh one before you start the application.

5
Ignoring the REG-03 clarification notice

If the officer issues a REG-03 notice and you do not respond within 7 working days, the application is automatically rejected. You then start over from TRN.

After Registration: What Comes Next

Once registered, you are immediately liable to file GST returns, even if you have zero transactions. The filing frequency depends on your scheme: monthly GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B for regular taxpayers, or quarterly returns under the QRMP scheme if your turnover is below Rs 5 crore. Failure to file returns for 6 consecutive months can result in cancellation of your registration.

Nil returns are still mandatory

A common founder mistake: assuming you can skip returns in months with no transactions. GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B are mandatory every period, with zero values if needed. Late filing attracts Rs 50 per day per return plus interest.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the GST registration turnover limit?

For suppliers of goods, the limit is Rs 40 lakh (Rs 20 lakh for special category states). For service providers, it is Rs 20 lakh (Rs 10 lakh for special category states). Interstate sellers and e-commerce sellers must register regardless of turnover.

How long does GST registration take?

If all documents are in order, GST registration typically takes 3 to 7 working days. If the officer issues a clarification notice (REG-03), you must respond within 7 working days or the application is automatically rejected.

What documents are needed for GST registration?

You need PAN card, Aadhaar of all promoters or directors, proof of business address (recent utility bill or rent agreement with NOC), bank account details, incorporation certificate (for companies and LLPs), and photographs of promoters.

Do I need GST registration to sell on Amazon or Flipkart?

Yes. E-commerce sellers must register for GST regardless of turnover. This is a mandatory registration requirement, and the platforms will not onboard you without a valid GSTIN.
